Gibson's Players of the Month (August 2012)

The Dog Days of August didn't slow down some spectacular play in the CFL as the second month of Canadian football worked through the calendar.

From a month's worth of highlights, the Gibson's panel determined the four players who best exemplified success on the wide open spaces of a CFL field.

And as it's been for many a year now in the CFL, the name of Anthony Calvillo isn't too hard to find when the honours are being handed out.

Calvillo, joins, JC Sherritt, Chris Williams and Jon Cornish at the top of the selection list for the month, four names that we suspect we may see more of as the season winds down towards the Grey Cup in November.

Of the four, the most impact thus far on the CFL season has come from Williams, who electrifies CFL crowds every time he has a touch on the ball, his kick and punt returns quickly becoming the thing of highlight reels, with more ready to roll we imagine.

The full review of the players of the month for August can be found below.

Offensive Player of the Month

Anthony Calvillo, Montreal Alouettes, QB

The Alouettes quarterback took a 66 percent completion average to the bank with him, amassing some 1,024 yards for his efforts, spurring on the Als to a winning month of August, stats that seem to have destined him to the Offensive player of the month award. While there have been concerns over his age and the injuries are taking a toll, for August Calvillo has been key in the Als return to prominence in the CFL East.

Defensive Player of the Month

JC Sherritt, Edmonton Eskimos, DE

The most intimidating member of the Eskimos defensive corps has been rattling off defensive player awards of the week through the summer, with three weekly awards and now his second player of the month award, Sherritt is clearly the most dominant defensive player in the league at the moment. Found frequently in the background of many an opposing offence, his contribution to the Eskimos defensive game has once again helped the Esks become one of the most feared of defences in the league.

Special Teams Player of the Month

Chris Williams, Hamilton Tiger Cats, KR

Perhaps the easiest award of the bunch for the Gibson's panel to hand out, every week seems to provide for a highlight reel kick return, as Williams makes quick work out of opposing team's special teams coverage. His work through August has placed Williams names among the elite of CFL history when it comes to thrilling kick returns. Williams is now mentioned in the same breath as past CFL greats, Henry "Gizmo" Williams, Keith Stokes and Bashir Levingston, nice company to join with still many years it seems ahead to own the category as his own.

Top Canadian Player of the Month

Jon Cornish, Calgary Stampeders, RB

A few weeks back, Jon Cornish had an uncharacteristic blast of temper on the sidelines, directed at some of his Stampeder team mates who perhaps weren't offering up a full effort. Say what you will about that burst of anger and team harmony, but when it comes time to showing the way on the field, Cornish has delivered on his side of the bargain, August was jumped to the top of the CFL's rushing leaders through august, pacing the Stampeders offensive attack almost single handed at times. As we head into the fall, where the running game takes on even more importance in the Grey Cup drive, the accolades for Cornish may continue on.
