Gibson's Players of the Week (Week Eleven) September 11, 2012

Chris Williams gets a week off from accepting honours, while Jon Cornish just keeps adding on to the listings as the folks at Gibson's surveyed the work of week 11 and found four deserving candidates from the weekend play.

Cornish who has been a Gibson's fixture for much of the season once again secured the bragging rights as Canadian Player of the week, providing a performance that gave his Stampeders yet another victory over their provincial rivals and adding to his reputation as the CFL's most reliable running back.

This week however, he stands solo as a returning name at the Gibson's podium, sharing the spotlight with some newcomers who showcased their skills in week 11.  Among those perhaps unfamiliar with their Gibson's (huh, who us?) are two Blue Bombers Demond Washington and Jason Vega, who were singled out for their work in  a losing cause against Saskatchewan.

Wrapping up the selection pool this week is Chad Kackert of the Argos, who had a remarkable game against Hamilton on Saturday, claiming the offensive player of the week award for his work.

The full review of the Gibson's selections can be found below.

Offensive Player of the Week and Top Canadian

Chad KackertToronto Argonauts, RB

A 239 yard rushing performance blazed the path to the Gibson's podium this week for the Argos Chad Kackert, as the University of New Hampshire running back galloped to and fro across the Rogers Stadium field on Saturday. The Argos management had been feeling a bit of heat over their decision to name Kackert the go to guy a few weeks back, leaving one time starter Cory Boyd to make his way to Edmonton. The efforts of Kackert over the last few weeks however perhaps showing why the Argos had such faith in his skills.

Defensive Player of the Month

Jason Vega,   Winnipeg Blue Bombers, DE

When they sit back and look at what went right and what went wrong for the Bombers in the banjo bowl, one thing that went very right was Jason Vega's defensive play. The Bombers Defensive End found himself frequently roaming the Rider backfield registering six tackles and three QB sacks on a day where Bomber highlights would in the end be few.  His work caught the eye of the Gibson's panel putting the Bomber on the Gibson's list for the first time this year.

Special Teams

Demond WashingtonWinnipeg Blue Bombers, KR

The Bombers consolation prizes after the weekend were doubled, as Demond Washington also wears the Blue and Gold to the Gibson's podium, all thanks to his skills as a kick returner where he gained 145 yards on returns and scored a wildly entertaining 82 yard punt return for a TD.

Top Canadian

Jon CornishCalgary Stampeders, RB

He's the most reliable back in the CFL this year and once again, Jon Cornish hauled the Stamps up on his shoulders and carried them on to a victory. Cornish's game in Edmonton on Friday once again provided the template for running backs league wide, his timely touchdown run in the end proving to be the margin of victory for the Stamps.  Each CFL team carries a majority of Canadians on it roster, yet game in and game out when the Gibson's folks look for an award, the name of Cornish is the one on their minds, such is the thing of domination for 2012.
